Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I configure my computer to retrieve my Alienwebshop mail?

A: Use the following settings for IMAP or POP:

  • Mail Server: imap.alienwebshop.com or pop.alienwebshop.com
  • Protocol: IMAP (IMAPS) or POP3 (POP3S)
  • Secure: Yes
  • Port: 993 or 995

Q: Why don't you provide unencrypted services like Telnet, FTP, IMAP, and POP3?

A: Because we put a large amount of importance on security, we do not use insecure or outdated protocols if reasonable alternatives are available. So, whenever possible, we provide encrypted protocols for any services that may require authentication.

This reduces the likelihood that someone could grab a password by sniffing network traffic.

Instead of providing UNIX shell access with Telnet, we use SSH, which is a secure protocol for doing the same thing. Instead of transfering files with FTP, we use SCP and SFTP (both based on SSH). Instead of serving email with IMAP and POP3, we use IMAPS and POP3S, secure versions of the same protocols.

Q: What if I want many domains to share the same zone file?
A: If you have a number of domains that should all share the same zone file, you only need to purchase Domain Name Service for the first domain. Each additional domain will only be a one-time setup charge.
Q: Are there any bandwidth limitations?
A: We do not currently specify any bandwidth limits. We believe that as long as no one customer is using a significant percentage of our bandwidth allocation, there is no reason to have such a restriction. Of course, we understand that once this is abused, we will likely have to implement a stricter policy about bandwidth usage. In the mean time, we appreciate if customers can give us an idea of what they believe their usage needs to be so that we can plan accordingly.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of mail forwarding aliases that come with the web hosting and mail forwarding accounts?
A: As with bandwith limits, we do not currently specify any limitations on the number of aliases that come with the Mail Forwarding services or the frequency of the changes. We believe that even if a few customers have a very high activity of changes, that's still not a good reason to implement an unnecessary restriction on our offering. Besides, once the traffic becomes too high for us to handle, we'll just write a tool to let you make mail forwarding changes yourselves.
Q: What happens to the access and error logs for my site?
A: We feel very strongly that a web hosting service should provide the customer with full access to the server logs, for both debugging and statistical purposes. We will take care of rotating the logs so you won't need to worry about it. And no, your logs do not count against your disk space usage.
Q: Do you provide secondary DNS services?
A: In most cases, we will provide secondary DNS services free of charge to those who ask. Send us email if you're interested.
